Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania and
is Australia's second oldest State capital. It is unique, having all the amenities
of a thriving city but is only minutes from a wide variety of natural beauties. Hobart retains
the flavour of a small town with a leisurely pace and a population of just 160
000. The city lies between Mt Wellington and the Derwent Estuary, a deep water
port.
There are many fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, most notably Salamanca
Place which has a terrace of warehouses dating back to the whaling days of
the 1830's. At nearby Battery Point, the original seamen's quarters of the city,
plus the Maquarie and Davey Street precinct, offer more than 60 historic buildings
classified by the National Trust.
Hobart features internationally each year as the finish line of the Sydney
to Hobart Yacht Race. Sullivans Cove is popular all year round as a major
southern port for overseas cruise liners.
Hobart Surrounds
For the 'shoppers' amongst us the markets and festivals in Tasmania cater for
all tastes. Australia's biggest craft fair is held in Deloraine each November.
In addition there are monthly festivals, including Hobart's Summer Festival and
the Taste of Tasmania.
Each year Hobart also welcomes the Targa
Tasmania drivers, teams and supporters, adding to the excitement of the region.
A short drive will take you to the convict settlement remnants at Port
Arthur and the Central Highlands in the East. Tasmania is ideal for self
driving holidays and a Bargain
Wheels car rental is a great way to see the best that the island has to offer.
