Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and the largest city in the state. The majority of Western Australia’s 1.8 million people live in the greater metropolitan area of Perth. Captain James Stirling founded the City of Perth as part of the Swan River Colony in 1829. Stating that Perth was "as beautiful as anything of this kind I had ever witnessed” he advocated that a colony be established there. The City of Perth is divided into five distinct precincts, each within easy reach of the city centre. Central Business District : Includes the main shopping areas of Hay and Murray Street Malls, Forrest Chase and Carillon City. Major cultural institutions, like His Majesty’s Theatre and the Perth Concert Hall, are also located here. Riverside : A recreation centre that becomes the focus of Australia Day celebrations each year and which includes the new wetlands at Point Fraser and the kangaroo colony on Heirisson Island. West Perth : Known locally as “the West End” and includes the areas between the CBD and West Perth. One of Perth’s most stylish locations, designer shops and café’s extend onto the sidewalk which gives it a little European flare. East Perth : Home to many of Perth's historic buildings such as the Perth Mint, the Catholic Cathedral of St Mary’s and Australia’s first purpose-built fire station. This is a landscaped region of architecturally magnificent homes and well-kept public gardens overlooking the Swan River. Northbridge : The centre of Perth’s nightlife and dining and the centre of a thriving backpacking industry. Northbridge is home to many of Perth's galleries and museums. Perth Surrounds Perth's Sunset Coast is a popular destination for enjoying sunsets, long relaxing walks along clean sandy beaches, swimming in the surf on a warm sunny day, or lazing on a beach towel. A short drive to the south from Perth brings you to Fremantle. This coastal area became world famous as Australia became the first country other than the USA to host an America's Cup defence. Perth is the gateway to Western Australia, Australia’s most expansive state. Popular destinations are the gold fields to the East, the Margaret River vineyards and renowned surfing to the south and the endless miles of golden sandy beaches to the north. Travel distances in Western Australia are long and time consuming. A Bargain Wheels car rental is the recommended way to reach these locations in your own time and with your own itinerary. Perth Accommodation & Dining Perth has a number of locations which spring into life, especially at the weekends.
