The following extract from the "Bathurst Civic Centenary Souvenir" booklet,
provides a useful overview of some of the interesting aspects of
the history of Bathurst. It gives an insight into unique facets of
the City which contribute to its character and heritage.
The early years of settlement, Bathurst, being the oldest inland settlement,
was used as an experimental farm for many agricultural projects. The results,
from such "trial and error" methods are impressive. Today Bathurst retains the
pioneer spirit in that it forges ahead, always looking to the future. Happily,
there also seems to be a strong movement to protect our heritage for future generations.
Bathurst is Australia's oldest inland settlement. The area was discovered by
William Evans in 1813. Governor Lachlan Macquarie selected a site for the town
on the 7th May, 1815, with Bathurst being selected as the name after the Secretary
of State for the Colonies, Lord Bathurst.
Proclaimed a town in 1852 and incorporated as a municipality in 1862, Bathurst
became a city in 1885.
Situated in the heart of Bathurst, the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum is
the home of the internationally renowned Somerville Collection. It is housed
in the 1876 Public School building which underwent major refurbishment before
being fitted out with stunningly beautiful exhibitions. Close to 2000 fossil
and mineral specimens are displayed in two main exhibitions - the MasterFoods
Fossil Gallery and the Minerals Gallery.
