Car Rental Singleton
On the banks of the Hunter River, about 250km north-west of Sydney, Singleton is at the heart of the Hunter Valley – that magical place of wine and horse studs. In a beautiful, rich and rolling landscape which is perfect for grazing, bucolic pursuits had to take a back seat, years ago to the vast open-cut coal mines which made this one of the most prosperous rural areas in NSW.
If you’re interested in firearms, make sure you visit the Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum of Small Arms at the Singleton Army Camp. Also worth a look is the historical museum in Singleton’s courthouse, built in 1841, and Bayswater Power Station – the biggest thermal power station in the southern hemisphere. The museum is housed in a building erected by Benjamin Singleton and is a fine example of Georgian architecture, with an interesting mid-Victorian portico.
The government of the day had begun the erection of a courthouse and lock-up at nearby Wittingham. However, as the population began to grow around Singleton, the erection of a courthouse some miles away was found to be ‘inconvenient.’ A local by the name of Benjamin Singleton took it upon himself to erect a building to the same size and specifications as the Wittingham courthouse and presented it to the Government. The lock-up portion of this building still remains in the structure.
