Jagara
People occupied the area of southern Brisbane. Coopers Plains was
probably used by the Chepara people who gathered at Eight Mile
Plains and the Yerongpan people who lived along Oxley Creek. The
Yerongpan hunted from the Goodna area, across Coopers Plains to
Brown Plains.
No
physical evidence of the original inhabitants remains in Coopers
Plains, although Cunningham did mention their presence in the area.
There was a Bora ring at Camira and another on Toohey Mountain. The
fig tree at Magnolia Cottage, Sunnybank, is reputed to mark the spot
of a Bora or dance ring.
The
wide flat plains and wooded hillsides provided good hunting grounds
for native fauna and the abundant creeks supplied turtles and
yabbies as well as fish and eels. The marshy areas along Stable
Swamp Creek were a haven for water birds and the 'imboon' or 'jumbun'
a bullrush whose roots the Aborigines would strip and chew. Yimbun
Park in nearby Macgregor was named after these.
