When
Captain Patrick Logan, first commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal
Settlement, sighted a 'very considerable river' on one of his
expeditions south of Brisbane in 1862, he promptly named it the
Darling in honour of the then Governor.
Darling returned the compliment by suggesting the river take the
name of Logan in view of his commandant’s 'zeal and efficient
service.' Logan, met a sticky end at the hand of a couple of
assassins, but his name lives on in this thriving city whose 170,000
residents live about halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Pride of Logan City's 500 parks spread over 2200ha is Daisy Hill
State Forest Park, which boasts a Koala Centre where orphaned and
injured animals are restored to health and returned to the park.
Open
daily, the centre provides educational programs on the koala and
other marsupials native to the area. Worth a visit, too, is the
National Trust-protected Mayes Cottage built by a pioneer settler in
1871.
