Attractions

At the center of the Tropical North is Cairns which offers a base for discovering the interesting riches of the region, and BargainWheels Car Rentals can provide you with hire cars to help you enjoy your stay. Tropical North Queensland is a very large region from reefs and islands, with coastal wetlands to mountains, tablelands, and grasslands.

We have made a pretty cool list of places that are a must when visiting Cairns.  Of course, a rental car from BargainWheels will make your travel plans so much more convenient while you are there, so jump in your hire car and head to the following –

GBR – short for Great Barrier Reef. This underwater playground is listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.  It is one massive coral garden, and an abundance of sea life call it home.  For a diver this is heaven.  But you can enjoy the reef a number of ways.  Contact one of the local operators that do day tours for either diving or sailing and there are a number of companies that also allow you to experience the Great Barrier Reef from the air.  Definitely, a must do when visiting Cairns.

Cairns Diving & Snorkelling – Dive & snorkeling trips to the Great Barrier Reef are very popular. With plenty of operators running daily trips, it’s not hard to find a vessel and crew that suit your needs. Diving Cairns is a great website to best help you plan and book your trip. With plenty of information about locations as well as Dive Operators, this website is a one-stop shop if you are planning on getting wet whilst in Cairns. Choose from great dive locations such as Agincourt Reef, Michaelmas Reef, Hastings Reef or even just a snorkel off Green Island.

3,2,1 … Bungy – When AJ Hacket Bungy arrived in Cairns the locals didn’t know what to expect. A purpose built tower was erected on the edge of the Rain Forest and they planned to offer tourists and visitors the opportunity to jump off of it, saved only from certain death by a big rubber band. Now Queenslanders, particularly in the Far North, are well known for calling a spade a spade and to be blunt most exclaimed: “Who are these bloody idiots”. What’s more, the AJ Hacket team planned to charge those who jump, for the pleasure. Well, the rest is history and after 17 years, literally, thousands of jumpers have taken the plunge off the 50-metre platform. And take it from someone who has done it, if you can stop the trembling in your knees long enough to look up, then you might just get to see one of the best views Cairns has to offer … after that … 3, 2, 1 Bunnnnnggggyyyyyy

Kuranda Scenic Railway – If you enjoy train rides then you will like the Kuranda Scenic Railway. If you like scenery, then you will love this trip and even if you like shopping you will really enjoy this trip. If of course, you don’t like any of these things then just sit back for 1 1/2 hours and enjoy the 34 kilometres as the 100-year-old railway climbs more than 300 meters through tropical rainforest, delves through 15 tunnels, bends around 98 curves and tiptoes precariously over 40 bridges. Then you might imagine how many blisters were caused banging in all those sleeper nails.

Skyrail Rain Forest Cableway – Skyrail is the World’s Most Beautiful Rainforest Experience. A 7.5km cableway, Skyrail glides just metres over the canopy of Australia’s World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforests. Two mid-stations, Red Peak and Barron Falls, provide the perfect opportunity to explore and learn more about this ancient environment on boardwalks and at the Rainforest Interpretation Centre.

Kuranda Village in the Rainforest – Whether you travel by train, Skyrail or take the short 25km drive from downtown Cairns, you’ll be glad you came. The Village is home to Museums, Art Galleries, Cafe’s and Restaurants, as well as famous Kuranda Markets . Enjoy the locals hospitality and experience Kuranda’s history and indigenous culture.

Cairns Tropical Zoo – A great way to come up close and personal with some of the locals. Animal locals that is. It offers a great day out for the family and you can park your hire car in the parking that is available.

White Water Rafting – WOW … nothing beats the adrenalin rush of White Water Rafting. Forceful water hurtling man and raft downstream … over, between, around and sometimes through the many rocks and boulders. Of course, you are given a helmet and a life jacket, but even still it’s the experience and safety focus of a good river guide that really makes the day and gets you back in one piece. No one puts on a better day than RnR White Water Rafting on the Tully River. Operating since 1986, RnR has established a reputation synonymous with safety, service and above all, fun. The best part about rafting on the Tully, compared to other spots I have rafted, is that the water flow is a controlled release rather than reliance on the melting snow … what does this mean to you … well for a start, you don’t need to wear a 7ml wetsuit.

Accommodation

We know that finding accommodation to suit your budget may not be the easiest thing, which is why we are starting a list of hotels and motels in the Cairns area that may give you what you need. In most instances, once you have collected your hire car from Cairns Airport you will only have to travel around 10 – 20 kms max to get to most hotels, motels and other accommodation. Make sure to mention you will have a hire car when booking your accommodation so they can reserve a car space for you.

Sheridan Plaza – Being so close to Cairns Airport, start your holiday in paradise at this 4 ½ star hotel. Of course, they may have some great deals throughout the year, but you will have to book in early if you want to stay here during the Spring/Summer months.

Tradewinds McLeod Holiday Apartments – The holiday apartments are so close to the airport and a great place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the Cairns City Centre. With your rental car parked at the apartments, you could easily still enjoy Cairns without the hassles of having to drive into the city area to reach your accommodation.

Restaurants

You can almost smell the seafood in Cairns especially along the Esplanade.  With so many little cafes and restaurants dotted throughout the city centre you are sure to find something to tantalise your tastebuds.

Red Ochre – is where you can enjoy some great modern Australian cuisine.  Seafood is on the menu along with duck and lamb.  There are some other surprises on the menu that will definitely cater to those more daring.

Barnacle Bill – located on The Esplanade, this locally operated restaurant is popular amongst visitors as well as locals.  It is easily accessible in your hire car, so don’t stress about how to get there.  It is known for its seafood, so make sure to try something a little bit different.
