Close to world famous wineries, highly-successful thoroughbred studs, crystal-clear fishing lakes, scenic bush-walking trails, the heritage-rich Upper Hunter Valley centre of Muswellbrook is a tourist’s dream town. Despite the curious spelling variations, the town on the New England Highway takes its name from local Muscle Creek from which the Aboriginal once harvested freshwater mussels.

Above all, however, Muswellbrook is a horse-lover’s district. Matt Peel’s Quarter Horse Stud and Rural Museum is just out of town, while you can hop aboard a horse-drawn carriage to take in the sights of historical Denman 25km to the west.

And, of course, no self-respecting Hunter Valley town would be complete without its cluster of vineyards. Most of the local vineyards are open daily for tastings and sales.

Nearby Wollemi National Park has its loyal band of devoted bush-walkers and water-sports lovers will be right at home on Lake Liddle.
